Everyone has their most treasured stories that they love to tell to any and all who are willing to listen. As for myself, mine would be how Letelia came into my life. One might ask “What is a Letelia ?” Letelia is a baby dragon who still calls her brightly swirled egg her home. I’m getting off track. Where was I? Not too long ago I was partaking in one of my favorite activities, spending the day climbing the towering cliffs of vertically jutting rock near where I live. I had worked my way up to the top of the cliffs where I could see for miles and feel the wind blow through my hair. Up until that day, this vista was my favorite. It was then that I happened to notice a funny shaped mound all by itself that wasn’t there the last time I had ventured up to those heights. Someone had made a large pile of leaves. This pile is visible in the picture on the right. I stood there for a minute trying to figure out why someone would make a pile of leaves on the edge of a cliff. The one thing that I could tell, however, was that it was still fresh because the leaves in the mound were still green.

I said to myself “What harm would it do if I peeked at the oddity?” I edged close to it and caught a glimmer of yellow rainbow color though a gap in the leaves. Curiosity drove me forward as I brushed away the foliage. A gasp escaped my lips as I saw Letelia for the first time. I had never seen a dragon egg before, though I had long been fascinated with them and had therefore read many books on the subject. This partially buried egg was the most magnificent and precious thing I had ever seen. After a while of gazing in wonder at the dragon egg I had happened upon I suddenly became sad. I said to myself, “I wonder where her parents are?” I had been sitting there for a while with no other dragon in sight. Surely the parents would have come to defend their offspring by now. Nevertheless, I continued to wait in hopes that someone would come for this little one. So I waited, and waited, and waited. It soon became obvious that no dragon was going to come along for this little one. What was I to do? I couldn’t leave something so special out in the wilderness to be discovered by predators. I carefully wrapped the bright egg in my cloak. The darkness of my cloak contrasted with the egg’s markings. I whispered to the young treasure I’d found “This cloth is dark like the night, and this night and forevermore you’ll have a safe and warm place to dwell. I’ll take care of you now.” With this, I started my way back towards my cottage with Letelia cradled in my arms. With that, I took the egg home with me. I built a fire and fashioned a makeshift nest out of a reed basket with pillows inside the bottom. I then lined it with a thick and fluffy blanket and placed Letelia inside. I then put the nest with Letelia in it near the fire, but not too close of course, where the heat flows. This served as an incubating area while I cared for her. Even though the nest I made for her was not perfect, it was made with lots of love and care, and I knew that that it would eventually mean more to a baby dragon who had been left on its own than an expertly made nest created without any thought or care. I went to bed that night far happier than I had in a long time, and I knew that Letelia would be happy here as well. The next day, (gingerly carrying a dragon egg down from the heights that I had found Letelia at was no easy task and took until late into the night) my first wakening thought was of Letelia. I immediately checked on her. It may have been a trick of the light, but it seemed to me that her egg seemed a little bit bigger than when I had found her. With the light of day, I was now able to get a better look at the vibrant markings on Letelia's shell that seemed to glow with an inner warmth. Based on her markings, I could tell that Letelia was a Snap Dragon and was the daughter of Star Fire and Laure, Fire and Wild Flower dragons respectively. Letelia was already near the fire in my fireplace, but since I now knew that she had some Air in her, I opened the window to let the fresh breeze in and hopefully make her more comfortable. Upon opening the window I saw Phrederic, an enchanted hedgehog with the ability to speak and a companion of mine, playing in the tall grass. I knew he would want to meet Letelia, so I called him over to the cottage. I told Phrederic about Letelia and how I found her. He was equally unhappy as I was that someone would leave a baby dragon out by itself the way Letelia was and vowed to help me protect her. He planed to be there with me to help Letelia learn and grow while she plays. Frederic was very happy at the idea of having a new playmate after Letelia hatched. This is how Letelia came into my life.
This is a picture of the basket and blanket (the pillows are beneath Letelia and therefore out of view) that make up Letelia's nest. I know the picture doesn't have any color to it, I was very suprised to even be able to draw it (art is not my forte). Hence I decided to put it online before coloring it in. This way a good copy will remain if the color version doesn't turn out well. :)
